English 10 Honours Outline

ENGLISH 10 HONOURS OUTLINE

    English 10 Honours is a course designed to challenge students who have a devoted interest in English literature.  The course is filled with diverse activities and projects aimed at promoting a further interest in world affairs through the study of English, not only as a subject but as a new way to experience life.  English 10 Honours covers a broad range of literary genres guaranteed to stimulate the mind and soul.  Titles listed below are tentative.

Shakespeare play – Romeo and Juliet
Novel study (2-3) – To Kill A Mockingbird, Animal Farm, Night
Poetry
Film Studies

Students at the Senior and Honours level are expected to undertake independent reading outside of class in order to increase vocabulary and literary skills.  A novel list will be circulated to each student and they will be required to choose a novel from the list.  Students cannot select a novel that will be and/or has been read in current/previous English classes.

A major research literary essay, consisting of THREE components will be worked on throughout the school year.  Research essay components will be worth 10% of each term.

Over the course of the year, students will develop skills in the following areas:
– writing and grammar
– oral presentations
– group and class discussions
– writing process:  pre-writing, drafting, revision, editing, and proof-reading
– paragraph and essay writing – home and in-class
– literary analysis and interpretation
– identifying different literary genres and literary elements
– critical thinking
– note-taking
– social responsibility – building classroom community and mutual respect
– group work

Students will be preparing throughout the year to write the Literacy 10 exam.
